Invasive vegetation sightings continue to increase at Smith Mountain Lake despite the stocking of 200 sterile grass carp in June to control the fast-spreading problem.

Reports of invasive vegetation have nearly doubled from 2025. Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission Executive Director reported at Monday’s board meeting that 82 sightings of invasive vegetation were reported last year and there have been 158 reports so far this year — with three reports made as early as that morning.

“The Waverly subdivision is now inundated,” Sage said of the spread. “Deer Creek Subdivision between Waverly and Goodhue Boat Company, Blackwater is also impacted. It’s pretty much in Deer Creek, Bull Run, Little Bull Run and Cool Branch. It is really kind of going hog wild.”
